Things are finally starting to heat up offshore, and the trolling is getting better and better as more pelagic fish move into our area. We have caught some schoolie mahi, some healthy blackfin tuna, and even a white marlin. The white marlin came into the spread under a black bart brasiliano, and then veered out and hit the long rigger ballyhoo with a chugger head on it. We haven’t caught a wahoo in a bit, but there should be some left out there if the guys in the shootout didn’t get them all. Trolling is my favorite type of fishing and therefore spring is our favorite time to fish out of Ponce Inlet. We have been running the bay boat out there while the big boat gets new Yamaha 300s installed, but that bay boat never ceases to amaze me 40 miles offshore. It’s quite the tank of a boat. Bottom fishing has been decent, with lots of vermillion and red snapper, as well as triggerfish, porgies, and almacos.
Inshore the fishing has been a tad slower for us, but seems to be getting better as the water warms up again. Redfish have been caught here and there, particularly on blue crabs. We have caught some really nice sheepshead in the last couple weeks, as well as a few black drum, and of course mangrove snapper. Running the beach for cobia has been successful for a few boats, but you really have to put your time in to find the good ones. We caught one on a vertical jig at 28 fathom, which tells me more numbers of them are showing up right about now. The windy weather has definitely been an issue when chasing manta rays, but nice glassy days are coming soon. If you want to get a taste of the fishing in Ponce Inlet, during our favorite time of the year, give us a call at 386-690-7406. Be safe out there guys.

This week the fishing has been excellent in the river near New Smyrna Beach, and the bite has been decent when heading offshore out of Ponce Inlet. There are bull redfish at the jetty, and they should hold there for another couple months. Some nice bull reds are being caught throughout the river as well. Most of my inshore fishing takes place in the mangroves, and although the fish generally are not as big as they are at the rocks, I find it fun to search for them in the mangroves and oyster bars of Calallisa Creek. Live bait works best but you can catch them on artificial fairly easily as well. When cruising the river, keep an eye out for rolling tarpon. I like to keep a spinning rod with a free lined live bait ready to go whenever we see one. Spanish Mackerel were along the beach last week in numbers but I am not sure if they are still there. Some big tarpon were caught off of the beach as well.
Heading offshore out of Ponce Inlet, look for a decent temperature break near the 28 fathom curve. Obviously, this can vary day to day, but the gulf stream tends be more stable during this time of the year, as we have less eddies that swirl off of the stream, meeting cooler coastal water. Some mahi were found as well and some nice size kingfish out towards this good water. On the bottom, the bite slowed down a little this week. We caught a nice Mangrove Snapper mixed in with Red Snapper, along with some porgies and lots of small black sea bass. I am hoping to start kingfishing more as fall comes upon us. If you are heading out and want a report before you go, feel free to call me anytime to talk fishing. Be safe out there guys and send me your fish pics. We found lots of schoolie sized mahi on weed lines between 25 and 40 miles east of New Smyrna Beach. It almost looked like spring time out there. Bottom fishing was fruitful, as we found large commercial grade vermillion snapper, as well as triggerfish and porgies, and the usually red snapper. I’m hoping to get out to the weather bouy in search of yellowfin tuna and blue marlin. I will let y’all know how it goes. Be safe out there and try not to fish alone! Cheers!!
Capt. Jimmy New Smyrna Beach Offshore Fishing Charters Fishing in New Smyrna Beach has been consistent as usual. Red Snapper season is upon us, and plenty of charter fishing boats were on stacked on top of the reefs and wrecks outside of Ponce Inlet the past couple weekends. The bite on the bottom has been time dependent and I would guess that changing sea temperatures have been affecting the fishing on the top and bottom. Trolling out of New Smyrna Beach in the summer can be slow once the day gets hot, so we bottom fish a lot in the summer. We have plenty of good holes for giant red snapper and grouper, so use your sonar machine to locate a good ledge or rock pile (any change in bottom), and do your best to find some fish. Looking forward to fall, the trolling should get better for a bit before winter is upon us. I’ll keep you guys updated! Good luck out there!

Inshore things have been pretty good, with most guys catching flounder limits before noon. We have been bottom fishing, as it is red snapper season, and we have had some luck. We found plenty of nice size red snapper in Ponce Inlet, and we added a mutton snapper to the mix. We find live bait to be best, with mullet or pinfish as our choice. I hope you had a great experience out there this year and remember for next time that these snapper see a lot of lines and bait, so scale down your tackle for the most bites.

Jimmy Tiblier7/2/2020 Hi everybody, BVO fishing here with a short article…
The seasons are changing and so is the fishing here in the New Smyrna Beach Florida area. As we roll into these hot summer months, be cautious when heading offshore. What may look calm in the morning can become 5-6 foot seas within a matter of minutes. As this warm weather pattern sets in, the fishing up top gets slower. Trolling after 10 or 11 am is usually fruitless, as the surface is too hot for bait, so they sit lower during midday hours. If you are heart set on trolling, take advantage of the morning and evening hours. We find it more productive to bottom fish during those midday hours when it’s hot as hell. Good luck out there folks! Sometimes we rig them with chugger heads so that they make a little smoke in the water. On charters and commercial trips, we also make wire pin rigs as opposed to monofilament when the kingfish or wahoo are biting. With all of the toothy critters in New Smynra Beach, these wire pin rigs help us land those fish, that we otherwise would not land. If you want to fish for wahoo and King Mackerel, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet are wonderful options for your family fishing charter. The rig works just as well on any other species out there. Good luck out there and have a great week.

Simply put, we have an overabundance of them. If you like to eat fish, I highly recommend booking a red snapper trip. The designated days to keep red snapper have been announced and they are July 10-12th and 17th. You only get to keep one per person, but we know where the big ones live and will make the most of the restrictions. New Smyrna Beach offshore Red Snapper trips will take place on BVO’s newest vessel, a 31 ft Stamas. This long range fishing boat will take you anywhere you want to go, safely and dry. t is perfect for a large group or the whole family.

The mahi bite is still pretty darn good right now in New Smyrna Beach. Last week, some beautiful blue/green water eddies extended further west than usual, allowing us to catch mahi only 10-12 miles offshore. We also spotted a large Great White Shark directly underneath the boat as we were reeling in a mahi. We are fishing on a new 31 ft Stamas, and I swear it is one fishy boat. So far, each trip, we have had desirable species swimming right up to the boat. We also cruised the beach this week, finding quite a few Spanish mackerel and Tarpon underneath them. We didn’t land any tarpon but catching Spanish mackerel on fly is a a blast. We will be getting out more in the New Smyrna Beach area over the next few weeks. Good luck out there!
Call 386-690-7406 or email [email protected] to book a trip (email is faster). www.bvofishing.com We had a fun week of fishing offshore in the New Smyrna Beach area, but the mahi bite, although strong, is not what we have seen in the past few years. On a good day we may get six fish over 30lbs, and on a normal day, we would get one gaffer, a couple of bailers and some marlin muffins. Anyway, we found some nice blue/green temperature break fingers, and we followed those around for Mahi and Blackfin. Still waiting on my big blue. We trolled naked ballyhoo and it really doesn’t matter how you rig them, just get the damn things swimming right (for starters).REMEMBER, even though you may think your bait looks great next to the boat at 7 knots, does not mean that all species of fish think the same. Play around with speeds and configurations and you will be happy you did. Here is a wonderful client named Matt with a nice Mahi he got yesterday in New Smyrna Beach offshore during his fishing charter with us. The fish would have never eaten had we not changed speeds regularly throughout the day. I kept seeing purple flashes from the tower and it looked like the mahi kept missing it. Slowed down a knot and this is the result.
