This week the fishing has been excellent in the river near New Smyrna Beach, and the bite has been decent when heading offshore out of Ponce Inlet. There are bull redfish at the jetty, and they should hold there for another couple months. Some nice bull reds are being caught throughout the river as well. Most of my inshore fishing takes place in the mangroves, and although the fish generally are not as big as they are at the rocks, I find it fun to search for them in the mangroves and oyster bars of Calallisa Creek. Live bait works best but you can catch them on artificial fairly easily as well. When cruising the river, keep an eye out for rolling tarpon. I like to keep a spinning rod with a free lined live bait ready to go whenever we see one. Spanish Mackerel were along the beach last week in numbers but I am not sure if they are still there. Some big tarpon were caught off of the beach as well.
Heading offshore out of Ponce Inlet, look for a decent temperature break near the 28 fathom curve. Obviously, this can vary day to day, but the gulf stream tends be more stable during this time of the year, as we have less eddies that swirl off of the stream, meeting cooler coastal water. Some mahi were found as well and some nice size kingfish out towards this good water. On the bottom, the bite slowed down a little this week. We caught a nice Mangrove Snapper mixed in with Red Snapper, along with some porgies and lots of small black sea bass. I am hoping to start kingfishing more as fall comes upon us. If you are heading out and want a report before you go, feel free to call me anytime to talk fishing. Be safe out there guys and send me your fish pics.
